DOG ETIQUETTE

When walking with your dog on-leash or off-leash always carry a bag and pickup after them.

Etiquette for off-leash areas
Newton has no formal policy about dog and owner etiquette in off-leash areas. The following is a collection of reasonable guidelines from other communities:

  • Clean up after your dog.
  • Bring more bags than you need.
  • Pickup up any abandoned poop you see.
  • Dog owners must maintain effective verbal control of their dogs and always be able to see their dogs when off-leash.
  • Dogs should be trained not to jump up on others.
  • Dogs that bark excessively should be quieted or removed from the off-leash area.
  • Dogs should wear a collar with identification at all times.
  • Remove prong collars before entering park.
  • Dogs must be licensed and vaccinated, healthy (have no contagious conditions or diseases), and be parasite-free.
  • Dogs should be at least 4 months old before enjoying an off-leash area.
  • Dogs in heat should not be brought to an off-leash area.
  • The number of dogs per person should be limited to three.
  • Dogs should be leashed prior to entering and leaving the off-leash area.
  • Owners should have a leash visible at all times.
  • Don't allow dogs to dig holes, and fill them in if they do.
  • Stay off ballfields, playgrounds, and other sensitive areas when they are saturated from rain.
  • Keep dogs leashed when city workers are in the parks.
  • Dogs that show continued aggression toward people or dogs should be removed immediately.
  • Dogs must not chase or disturb wildlife or enter sanctuaries and/or sensitive open spaces (such as gardens).
  • You are personally liable for any damage or injury your dog inflicts or receives.
